BPSC 53 to 55 mains examination’s result is round the corner. There is a consensus among the examinees that it will be declared in December 2012. And they are (perhaps) almost right, because before December, three major festivals are lined in the state. It is also true that answer sheet evaluation process is in full swing. Since evaluation is at last stage, rumors (not all) about the marking pattern are bound to be circulated at different levels. Now the question is, are these rumors reliable? Can someone rely on these circulating marking patterns? Well, it is very tough to reach on any conclusion. One can neither deny nor can accept those rumors in toto. We are also aware that it is hard to crack the confidentiality of any institution's examination evaluation process, especially constitutional body like BPSC. So, before declaration of mains result, saying anything about the marking pattern will be full of risks. Despite all these protocols, some conclusions can be drawn:

1. As far as BPSC civil services examination is concerned, past trends suggest that few (two or three) subjects outperform rest of the subjects. But, from this conclusion one cannot reach on a judgment that only those students succeed who select so called outperforming subjects. If you have any doubt in your mind regarding this conclusion, just visit BPSC website and check marks of mains (48-52) qualified students. You will be able to clear some of your doubts about the marking and success. Well, it is true that some students of so called outperforming subjects get more than 160 marks in one paper and in the absence of scaling they find a place in final list. This year, some students are claiming that those, who opted LSW, have a better chance of selection. Even, they are claiming that students have scored more than 280 in this subject. It cannot be denied completely. Due to the scoring (and favourite among Bihar students) nature of this subject some might have scored 280 to 300. But nobody can claim that all the students of LSW were awarded 280 to 300 marks. It will be ridiculous to claim and more ridiculous to accept that claim. Always keep one thing in your mind, “your performance count, not the performance of the subject.” Let me clarify here, merely one paper or one subject cannot push you in the final list. There are six papers in the mains examination and your performance in each subject, rather than in one subject, will decide your fate.

2.  Even average marking in each subject will pay: According to the BPSC (unconfirmed) number of seats is about 800, which suggests that about 2000 students will be called for interview. Consequently, it also suggests lower cutoff for respective categories. Consensus has emerged on 700, which is almost true. However, plus-minus 10 cannot be denied. What it suggests? It suggests that even average 120 marks in each of the six papers can provide you a chance to qualify for a personality test. Now, tell me, is booming factor going to play a major role in selection? Not at all. I am not saying here that fetching 170 marks in one paper will not help you. It will certainly help anybody. Those who score more than 170 marks in one paper, chances of qualifying are greater for him. But my point is that even we accept the so called booming concept of few subjects, little more than average performance will guarantee one’s place in the mains qualifying list. So, if your optional is not among those so called claimed boomed subjects list, don’t fade up with circulating rumors, regarding marking pattern. Despite better than average marking in some popular subjects, not all the students of those subjects (like LSW), are going to qualify. 

3. Honourable Patna High Court has suggested BPSC to follow scaling in the current examination. However BPSC (through E-mail) is saying that it will not follow scaling. But one thing is clear, BPSC is well aware about the mass conception of marking pattern of some subjects. So the present chairman will try not to repeat it's past mistakes. Hence, don't accept each rumor, it could be a humour.

(Some good friends of this blog are requesting me to tell about the marking pattern of subjects. First of all, I like to thank all those friends who believe in me. But, sorry friends, it is not possible for me to disclose the scoring of different subjects. It is too confidential as well as beyond reach. If somebody is claiming about the scoring, he may be right at some extent, but nobody can guarantee about those claims. I have some information (through my sources, which cannot be verified) regarding the marking pattern, but I cannot post here, since it will always be doubted and rightly so. I am also not an exception.
